Hailing from Te Rotorua Nui a Kahumatamomoe, Mikaere has always had a deep connection with the native rākau of Aotearoa. This has led to him learning the art of whakairo, Māori wood carving, with a particular focus on taonga pūoro, traditional Māori instruments that allow the rākau to sing. The construction and performance of taonga pūoro allows one an insight into traditional knowledge of the ngahere, and the reciprocal relationship where taking care of the rākau allows them to take care of you.
Mikaere currently works at the Ministry for Primary Industries, and has a passion for opening the doors for more young Māori and other indigenous groups to have a voice at the table.
