Dr. Tim Payn (PhD)
I’m one of Scion’s Principal Scientists. My general areas of interest are sustainable forest management, sustainability frameworks, climate change and the environment. I have progressively worked my way from phosphate adsorption chemistry, through soil and site classification, forest productivity, sustainability frameworks, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and am currently doing a bit of work on liquid biofuel standards and credence attributes and markets. I’m a fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry and a recently appointed Trustee and Chair of the NZIF Foundation, established to advance education in relation to forestry.
Internationally, I have worked with forest agencies worldwide on the development and implementation of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, mainly through the Montreal Process but also with other groups such as FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment team, ITTO, Forest Europe and IUFRO. Recently I was part of the team that developed the joint Australia New Zealand standard for sustainable forest management AS/NZ4708.
When not driving a computer I’m out on the ebike, in the garden, or doing a bit of kayaking or tramping.
